Overview

With more than three hundred recordings to his name and multiple Grammy nominations, José Serebrier is one of the busiest and most successful conductors around. Admired across the globe, he has proven for several decades that he is not only one of the most original composers, but that he is also a major conductor for our times, one which the legendary Leopold Stokowski has called ""the greatest master of orchestral balance"". This book recounts his artistic journey and shares his many fascinating stories about encounters with famous personalities, past and present, in the classical music world. The product of several years of conversations, his comments have been collected and annotated. They are accompanied by an updated and complete discography, a list of his published compositions, and critical observations by major music historians.

Reviews

Jose Serebrier concentrates the energy and vitality that makes him one of the best conductors of our time. As a composer, he has a most unique voice. This book recounts his amazing trajectory.--Thomas Frost, former executive, SONY Classical, GRAMMY Award-winning producer for Vladimir Horowitz This new book is a musical journey that leads through the twentieth century. What a joy to realize that Jose Serebrier is not only a formidable violinist, conductor, and composer but also a marvelous story teller. The stories are fascinating.--Ned Rorem, composer, Pulitzer Prize winner

As long as José Serebrier flourishes, the Golden Age is still with us. An inspiration and a joyous companion to those of us who are privileged to share his friendship and generosity. It is a useful book for aspiring conductors or composers with a lot of good advice, pertinent information and captivating opinions from the man himself. If you are a Serebrier admirer than this book is a must. If you are not, but love classical music, it is still very valuable for the personal views and perspectives of one of its most remarkable exponents. José Serebrier is a unique phenomenon in the world of classical music. Quite apart from his brilliance as a musician, he is one of the most entertaining and compelling of raconteurs, and now at long last his stories and insights are appearing in book form. This book is a dazzling account, not only of José Serebrier himself but of classical music in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond. Indispensable, illuminating reading for anyone who loves music and great story-telling. One of the most appealing parts are the instructive memories and anecdotes about colleagues or mentors. We review those who helped [Serebrier] forge his personality (Monteux, Dorati, Stokowski, Szell), but also Bernstein, Celibidache, Munch, Paray, Martinon, Leinsdorf, Maazel, Levine and a few others, including the friend foreword editor, John Corigliano.
