Reviews

The work is useful because it delineates important themes in an organic style. Though not a system, it is nonetheless a synthesis of rhetoric, psychology, philosophy, literature, theology, and biography through a coherent, lucid account of Newman's principles, methods of thought, and states of mind over his lengthy and famous career. Furthermore, it uses precise techniques and detailed apparatus for analysis. (Charles E. Hewitt, University of Notre Dame)
