Overview

Excerpt from John Crome and John Sell Cotman On the other hand, it is right to recognise that Crome and Cotman are far more than local glories Norwich claims them by right of birth, England by right of genius. Both of these painters, Cotman especially, have suffered misconception, since much of their best work, indeed all Cotman's best work, is in private hands and unknown to the general public; and both have been too often judged by imitations of their pictures. Crome's work in particular has been confused with that of his pupils, besides being most extensively imitated. On this account the writer has preferred to treat as far as possible with pictures and drawings that are not only authentic but attested. For help in this matter, as on every other point connected with the subject, he offers the most cordial thanks to Mr. James Reeve, Curator of the Castle Museum at Norwich, who, with generous kindness, placed his unique collection of original documents relating to the Norwich School at the writer's disposal. Mr. Reeve's authority on the subject, which he has made his life-long study, is acknowledged to be unequalled; and whatever merit this monograph may have as a record of facts, is due to him.
