OverviewJoaquin Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. In December 1895 Sorolla met the owner of the winery Panquehue Errazuriz, Rafael Errazuritz, and was subsequently commissioned to paint four works about wine. This appears to be only the second time wine entered Sorolla's artistic world. The next time wine featured in Joaquin Sorolla's work was in 1907 with An Elderly Castillian Pouring Wine 1907. This man also appears in Aldeanos leoneses also from 1907. In 1910 Joaquin Sorolla painted scathing criticism of the Basque mentality especially with paintings of drunkards. Sorolla did clearly not support independentism and sponging on the rest of Spain, see also author's Joaquin Sorolla Painter ISBN 9782919787340.
