Joanna's First Day of Before and After School

Overview

Joanna's mom is newly single, and they've moved to a new house in the big city. On the first morning, her mom has a hard time getting Joanna and her brother, Gavin, out the door. First, they drop Gavin off at daycare. Then, it's Joanna's turn! Today is her first time ever at the before-school program. She has a great time meeting other kids and playing, and she loves her new teachers. But when class is over, and Joanna has to stay behind with the other kids in the after-school program, she starts to feel nervous. It's so late, and the sky is getting dark. What will she do if her mom doesn't come back? Will it always feel like this? Joanna's First Day of School is a great guide for kids who are nervous about going to before- or after-school care. With humour and thoughtfulness, it walks them through what a typical day is like, showing them that there's nothing to be afraid of. After-school programs can be overwhelming, but bright pictures and a simple story help kids see that they're not alone, and that there's nothing to be scared of at all.

Author Information

Elizabeth Marshall has worked with children for over seventeen years, eventually specializing in helping children with autism and those with high-risk behaviours. She's seen everything, and has noticed there are books missing in our classrooms that would really help students get past the anxiety of certain elements of school. That inspired Elizabeth to write her own books, to share them with parents, educators, psychologists, and of course, children! In her spare time Elizabeth loves crocheting and cooking. She's a single mom living in Toronto.
