He has been a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times since 1991, where he has published more than 2000 reviews, features, and interviews. Pagel is on the faculty of Claremont Graduate University and an adjunct curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, NY. Pagel was the recipient of an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Contemporary Arts Criticism in 1990 and was a Macgeorge Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia in 2002.
