Overview

Born of a virgin, crucified under Pontius Pilate, died and was buried, and rose again on the third day - this, the Church's conception of Jesus, is based on mystical and mythological thinking. But Jesus is not a citizen of another world, he is not an alien who dwelt amongst us for a short time. He is no omniscient and almighty miracle worker. And he is not an only-begotten Son of God. The author looks at the gospels from a modern angle. Was Jesus a person like us? He investigates these issues conscientiously and opens up a new way in which the modern Christian, despite everything, can confidently be a believer. The author, Roger Lenaers, born in Ostend in 1925, is a Flemish theologian and classical scholar and a member of the Jesuit Order. For almost half a century he has been concerned with developments within the Christian faith. The translator, Dan Farrelly, Dan Farrelly (1934-) studied scholastic philosophy for three years in Melbourne; then German and French for four years at Melbourne University and received his BA (1st Class Hons); then studied theology for four years at Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main (1962-66) before going on to doctoral studies at the Institut de philosophie in Strasbourg. Having completed his doctorate in 1970, he worked as a Lecturer in German at University College Dublin before becoming Director of the UCD Drama Studies Centre in 1995. He is currently General Editor and a Director of Carysfort Press. His own publications include Goethe and Inner Harmony (1973); Schoene Seele Studies: Essays on Goethe (1978); Goethe in East Germany, 1949-1989: Towards A History of Goethe Reception in the GDR (1998); Between Myth and Reality: Goethe, Anna Amalia, Charlotte von Stein (2010); Cambridge Scholars Publishing has recently published his translation of David Asher's book on New Material by Schopenhauer and about Schopenhauer (2015); his German translation of Between Myth and Reality is to be published in 2016 with LiteraturWissenschaft.de. He has also translated plays by Goethe, Buechner, and Wedekind as well as 10 books of the German philosopher, Josef Pieper, for St. Augustine's Press, South Bend.
