The power and clarity of these images, and the accompanying commentary by Dr Shimon Gibson allow the reader to revisit a world long disappeared. The book is structured around a map of Jerusalem dating from the start of the 20th century. The reader is taken on a tour through the city to revisit the streets and their inhabitants as they were in the 19th century.

Author Information

Author of Jerusalem in Original Photographs 1850-1920. A Senior Fellow at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, working in Israel and Palestine, he is a graduate of University College, London. He completed his Ph.D. on landscape archaeology and the study of ancient field systems. Between 1989 and 1995, he was a staff member of the Palestine Exploration Fund in London where he dealt with the cataloguing of nineteenth-century archival materials and photographs. He has conducted many excavations and field surveys in southern Levant.
