OverviewDuring a holiday on the island of Saipan Marcus Grehan was given a ride in what was claimed to be the only surviving drivable WW2 jeep in the entire Mariana archipelago. He was intrigued. Was such a vehicle so unique? Surely if that vehicle had survived for so long in the unforgiving climate of the tropics, others must have too? The hunt was on. Finding a genuine WW2 jeep proved to be far more difficult than he imagined. So many purported wartime vehicles turned out to be, on closer inspection, post-war models. Eventually, after a very long search, a genuine Willys MB jeep came to light in the Philippines with a proven history - even to the extent that the U.S. Army regiment to which it had been issued was known. Despite possessing no more than the average motorist's mechanical knowledge, Marcus set about restoring the jeep to 'service' condition. At the same time, he looked into the combat history of its parent regiment. When, finally, the jeep was back on the road, Marcus decided to retrace the routes it had driven during its wartime life through its battles in the Pacific theatre. That completed the cycle for Marcus. But then his 'finder' discovered another genuine WW2 jeep and Marcus could not resist the challenge, for this was a Ford GPW. This one, however, was in terrible condition and needed a virtual complete rebuild. A whole host of new skills had to be learned, and new parts sourced, mainly from 'new old stock'. Many months later the Ford was ready for the road and, as with the Willys, Marcus set off to follow the journeys the jeep had undertaken during the war, as, in this case, the division to which the vehicle belonged was known. Jeep Hunter takes the reader through the intriguing combat stories of the two jeeps and the challenging task of restoring two eighty-years-old vehicles back into drivable condition. Jeep Hunter demonstrates how an ordinary individual with no previous technical experience can, with time, patience, and limited funds, restore two long disused and severely neglected jeeps into rare and highly desirable models of history's most iconic military vehicle.
