Table of ContentsReviewsA book for the scholar primarily, in spite of the fact that the stated aim is to present the man rather than the musician. It is a portrait of the man in relation to his music. There is some personal and anecdotal material about his childhood, schooling, early passion for music, love of nature, ability to identify color and sound, the visual with the auditory. The author follows his training at Helaingfors, later Berlin and Vienna. Back to Finland - marriage (mentioned in three lines!) - teaching - composing. The balance of the book, and the better part, deals with his works:- how and where written, how received, material of interest to Sibelius enthusiasts. The material, quiet in any case, is handled with dignity and restraint. The man emerges only through casual comments, - joy in life, indifference to opinion, steadfastness, freedom.
