Jay the Magical Middle Schooler

Overview

Sixth grader Jay Soren knows they'll activate their magical powers in three years, just like any other ordinary wizardette or wichette in their world. But when they're bullied by a narrow-minded jerk at recess, they accidentally use magic to lift their bully six feet off the ground! Jay is shocked and terrified by their abilities. But when Jay is whisked off to Magegard School for the Magically Gifted, they learn that there are other magical kids just like them-kids like the reading whiz Anthony Diaz, who befriends Jay as they embark upon their new journey. But being a magical middle schooler isn't all spells and potions. Jay must learn to control their volatile magic, all while discovering the thrilling new sport of teskis, dealing with another school bully, and facing the possibility of having a brand new stepparent. To make things more complicated, Jay must confront one of their biggest fears: introducing themself as their authentic, nonbinary self. Join Jay as they step inside Magegard and discover more about their world, their magic, and-most importantly-themself. Reviews

""Overall, the novel is a sensitive and perceptive look into a nonbinary child's journey... A heartwarming magical-school journey..."" - Kirkus Reviews

Author Information

Sam started writing stories as soon as they learned to write. They enjoy reading, especially middle grade novels, and walking in parks. Their favorite foods include noodle kugel, curry, and burritos (but not at the same time). If they had a favorite character (and they don't!) it would probably be Chakey. Austin is an illustrator and cartoonist based in Boston, Massachusetts. His drawings emphasize character, communication, and clean lines. He's drawn to depicting mischief and miscellany! When Sam asked him to draw Jay he couldn't think of a better project to be attached to!
