OverviewThe Japanese art collections of Europe have long been a subject for conjecture among art connoisseurs. The sheer size of the collections, combined with their incomplete documentation, has meant that many of the works have never been appraised, and extensive publication on them has been difficult -- until now. Fielding a team of expert critics and photographers, Kodansha set out to catalog the collections of the great European museums and, working with specialists and museum curators, authenticated and photographed thousands of works. Hundreds of new pieces reemerged in the process, among them picture scrolls (emakimono), hanging-scroll pictures (kakemono), and painted screens (byobu). A number of these rediscovered masterworks are of national treasure quality, increasing the value of the series as a whole and making it an indispensable work for serious collectors, libraries, and museums. Volume 11 contains the first thorough research ever undertaken of selected museums in Prague, Budapest, and Vienna. Rare paintings, ivory carvings, lacquerware, and pieces from early European collections are among the featured works. Volume 12 highlights pieces from museums in Hamburg, Dresden, Amsterdam, and other European cities. The international edition of each of these volumes, originally published for the Japanese reader, contains a 15,000-word English text.
