After a career as a Navigating Officer in the Merchant Navy and ship management, he joined the UK's National Maritime Institute in 1983 as a Project Officer. He worked on a number of UK and European research programmes, including the UK's Efficient Ship Programme; the Resources from the Sea Programme; Wealth from the Oceans Programme; EUROMAR and the European Commission's MAST II, MAST III and Fifth Framework Programmes. He is a Member of the Society of Underwater Technology and sits on their Underwater Robotics Group.
