Overview

Innova Reading Bookshelves are designed by ELT experts in the UK specifically for children whose first language is not English. A set of magical tales encourage children to learn to read English through a range of classic stories. A controlled syllabus progression for vocabulary and sentence structure ensures easy comprehension, with an interactive element at the end of every page that challenges children to predict What happens next? . Grade 4 teaches reading skills to beginners in English aged 4 to 9, improving on skills learnt in Grade 3, and includes a detailed Guide for Teachers and Parents, for classwork or one-to-one learning. Each text contains vocabulary, comprehension and grammar activities for each reader, and poems too, as well as pop out characters for story retelling. Book 5 centres on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk retold by author Terry Phillips. A free downloadable audio version is available free at: innovapress.com/readers or by scanning the QR code on the back cover of each book.

Author Information

Terry Phillips has worked in ELT for more than 40 years as a teacher, teacher trainer, manager, language school owner, author and ELT consultant. As a consultant, he has worked in more than 25 countries in all parts of the world, advising state and private language institutions on all aspects of school management. As an author, he has been a freelance writer with his wife Anna for the last 20 years, producing more than 160 published books in ELT, working for all the major publishers, and especially for Garnet Education, for which company Terry and Anna produced many works for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), including the multi-level EAP course, Progressive Skills in English. His books are taught in a large number of universities and language centres in the UK and around the world, and the original Skills in English was highly commended in The Duke of Edinburgh's English Speaking Union (ESU) Award for 2004, and the English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) series won the ESU award in 2009. When the newly formed Innova was asked to source graded readers for young learners, Terry, as Business Development Director, realised that there was a gap in the market. He discovered that the vast majority of readers currently available do not actually teach reading in a structured way. The Innova graded readers for young learners were the result of careful research, years of expertise in teaching and teacher training, and being a father of two. He was assisted in his research by his elder daughter, a devoted primary teacher who loves to discuss her observations and insights into child development and education. He holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading, UK, a Specialist Certificate in Teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter and a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (now DELTA) from the Royal Society of Arts, London.
