Overview

This is an exciting series of books to develop the confidence of young readers. The National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 in reading, writing and speaking guides both the text and the range of supporting activities. Stories are told in rhyme, or in strong, rhythmic prose. Repetitive, easy rhymes are highlighted so that younger children can join in and increase their confidence. A 'ready to tell' section encourages children to rearrange episodes from the story and increase confidence by retelling it. Picture dictionary pages illustrate more difficult words and present key words in context. Each book ends with a practical activity inspired by the story. Notes for adults provide background information on the story and suggestions for encouraging children. The chosen font increases word-shape recognition. Coloured backgrounds are in line with current advice on making reading easier for children with dyslexia.
