A reprint of Alfred Maskell's volume which originally appeared in 1905. The text extends from prehistoric ivory carvings to those created to that date. The emphasis has been on beauty and the part ivories have occupied in the history of art. The author employed as particular examples ivories accessible in great national (British) collections. ??257 illustrations on 89 full page plates in gravure enrich the text; the reproduction of the latter is only passingly satisfactory.
