I've Seen a Lot of country.

Overview

As book 4 of ""I've Seen a Lot of Country"" opens Long Tack and Stumpy are back on the track riding a sheep wagon as far as Bendigo, chasing a tip off that Colin's dad, Bill, may have been working at a pub in Bendigo. Colin's enquiries at Bendigo pubs drew a blank. After an enforced stopover in Echuca when Longtack is temporarily crippled by stepping on a nail, they head for Sydney, stopping over in Beechworth. With empty tucker bags they try to bite locals for a feed but get nothing. Finding the baker shop empty Longtack grabs a couple of hot loaves and the two leave town in a truck that gets stopped by police who are looking for bread thieves. In Jerilderie they bump into Tomcat and Ned and are told Tomcat has had a falling out with his mate Chooka over a ""sheila"". Meanwhile Longtack and Stumpy get short term work at a shearing shed as unskilled roustabouts. Next they chase wheat harvesting work, but end up working on a Murray river wood lot instead. After an altercation with snow droppers they again head for Sydney. In March of 1932 Longtack and Stumpy head for Sydney Harbour to do some busking on the day the bridge is opened and look on as De Groot rides in and slashes the ribbon ahead of premier Jack Lang. Not long after leaving Sydney a rattler jump ""on the fly"" goes wrong and Longtack is left hanging from the side of a rail truck about to be crushed between it and the bridge. Longtack must jump from the train and risks death in doing so. He eventually recovers after laying under a bridge for weeks looked after by Stumpy.
