It's Hard to Hug a Porcupine

Overview

It is hard for Priscilla Porcupine to attend parties with her friends because her prickly quills ruin the fun and hurt people. After a birthday party that ends badly, she sadly retreats to her den because she doesn't want to hurt anyone else. But she is hurting, too. So her friends put their heads together and collect items from the forest to create a soft coat Priscilla can wear in public to keep her quills from hurting others. Priscilla is overjoyed and grateful for the kindness of her friends. It's Hard to Hug a Porcupine reminds readers that friends who struggle to fit in are often the ones who need kindness most.

Reviews

This is darling, and a great, helpful lesson to boot! - Gloria Gaither (Songwriting legend, author of non-fiction and children's literature) When I need something written with warmth and substance, I call Emily Sutherland. I've known her for almost twenty years and writing is her calling. And I have a feeling she is just getting started. I would love to see It's Hard To Hug a Porcupine become a classic. - Mark Lowry (Singer, songwriter, humorist, storyteller, children's author) I heartily recommend It's Hard To Hug a Porcupine, or anything else penned by Emily Sutherland! She is a terrific writer and a person I can count on for a great story and a positive message! - Joe Bonsall (Oak Ridge Boys member, 10 time author) Emily Sutherland has that rare gift of humor plus a razor-sharp, relevant message buried in her stories. Knowing her for ten years, I've had a front row seat to her creativity and sincerity. Her purpose has always been crafting words that matter to a wounded life. Mark Means (Marriage & Family Therapist) This story is so good it hooks me in. I like the rhyming and the plot. - Ashton (Age 13) There's nothing about this story I don't love. My favorite part is that it's all about caring for your friends. - Avery (Age 11) [Emily's] story is very creative and peaceful. Just like her. And I love the forest setting. - Eli (Age 7) I love this story. I love pink balloons. And I love how friends can cheer us up. - Izzy (Age 5)
