Reviews

Books are a wonderful way to show children different things about subjects! This book is titled in a way that sounds like it is all about drawing and painting but it is so much more! Sesame Street does an amazing job of showcasing the different aspects of the field of art. The characters are shown on each page engaging in a different activity that is considered to be art. There is so much more to art than drawing and painting like making music, making crafts etc. This is a wonderful and fun way to show children all the different things they can do. It can inspire children to want to learn more and possibly fall in love with a different part of the field of art. Each page has some real-life pictures to go with the aspect that is being described. This makes it more relateable to the reader and encourages them to want to continue to learn more. A wonderful addition to any library!Reviewer Rating 5 --Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) -- Website (6/25/2022 12:00:00 AM) With bold text and lively photographs, this colorful title involves favorite Sesame Street characters sharing the world of art with young readers, who will learn about the different fields of art, such as painting, photography, music, dance, acting, and writing. Children will love seeing their favorite characters--presented as photographed puppets, often with speech-bubbled dialogue--creating art of their own and will be inspired to make some themselves. Interactive text asks questions and prompts children to paint, photograph, search for instruments to play, and act out stories. Bright splashes of color bring each page to life and will be sure to grab and keep readers' attention. The large, bold text makes this a great title for emerging readers and for shared reading. Following the main text comes a list of ideas that will have kids using their imaginations to produce their own artwork. A glossary, list of suggested reading, and index round out this solid addition to nonfiction collections.--Booklist -- Journal (10/15/2021 12:00:00 AM) This cheerful, simple informational text about art, in its many forms, presents familiar, beloved faces from Sesame Street who model the fun of being artists. Large, lively photographs of children and muppets alike accompany short text sections that identify different art forms, from visual arts to music to acting to dance, and introduce young listeners to basic definitions and recognizable tools. With upbeat declarations, this book encourages and highlights the many opportunities to use one's imagination. However, since few terms are supported by visual examples or full explanations, supplementary images, videos, or guided discussions may prove necessary to describe high vocabulary words, like orchestra and actors, to the target audience. In addition, references to popular art topics, such as the Museum of Modern Art and Claude Monet, may not spark connections. Following the main narrative, an 'Idea Studio' section includes six easy-to-do art activities best practiced at home. The book closes with a short glossary, brief index, and three-item list of suggested children's books for more in-depth exploration of arts subjects. These elements will prove too advanced for the primary target audience to read and comprehend. VERDICT Though not an essential purchase, this introductory book about art is best shared between adults and children who appreciate the familiar, trusted characters engaging in different modes of creativity.--School Library Journal -- Journal (10/2/2021 12:00:00 AM)
