Reviews

Set in a region which saw only a light influx of Germans, Islands of Deutschtum highlights the occupational continuity of immigrants from Saxony and neighboring industrial areas who settled these New England textile towns. It documents the surprising persistence of German institutions under less than optimal conditions. By venturing outside the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic mainstream, McCaffery fills a serious gap in the history of German America. (Walter D. Kamphoefner, Texas A & M University) This study is an outstanding example of a young author uncovering facts about the German element in New England that scholarship previously had presumed non-existent. Libraries and students of German Americana enthusiastically welcome these new discoveries and the significant advances of our knowledge demonstrated in this volume. (La Vern J. Rippley, St. Olaf College) An outstanding work by a young author who uncovers facts about the German element in New England, one which scholarship previously had presumed non-existent. Libraries and students of German Americana enthusiastically welcome these new discoveries and the significant advances of our knowledge demonstrated in this volume. (Newsletter - Society for German American Studies) McCaffery's use of standard historical sources is excellent. (W.K. McNeil, Choice) 'Islands of Deutschtum' is a superbly researched study dramatizing a vibrant and now much better known German-American experience. It documents an ethnic community of surprising vitality and remarkable tenacity in an area not normally associated with a notable German-American presence. This book takes its place among the strong regional studies of the American immigrant experience. (John Kulas, The German Quarterly)
