The Nightlocke has... changed. Gone are his violent and wicked ways. The Nightlocke has pulled away from the darkness to become Arthur once more, and it's all thanks to his beautiful bride, Kymra. Years have passed, and the two have lived in harmony with the Kingdom of Odemark. Their son, Khalan, is growing up fast, and the time has come to send him and Princess Zoey to the Academy in Oceanus to further their education before taking the throne. But along the way raiders ambush the carriages, and the Nightlocke must embrace the dark again. Something strange is happening in the lands and fear quickly begins to spread. As time slowly passes, he begins to make friends with the other outcasts and finally seems to find a place where he belongs. But things take a harsh turn when the Academy is suddenly attacked by dragons. Stepping into his father's shoes, Khalan and his friends decide to track the monstrous beasts across the sea to the one island no one can find. The dragon's home in Dangeni. Will Khalan make it in time to save those taken by the dragons? Or will his inexperience and lack of control over his shadows be his undoing?
