Ishmael. Life changes us

Overview

This is the English translation of the original Italian novel. What could possibly connect Munich in Germany, Provence in France, a small town in Tuscany, and... Thailand? We might rightly wonder... The truth is, the story unfolds on two levels: the real-life one of Nanni and Marina (one living in Monaco, the other in Provence) and the fictional one of the novel the protagonist is writing, set in Thailand. The two narratives intersect in each chapter, influencing each other. At a certain point, the protagonist's imagination is perceived almost as a real experience, helping him to grow and mature as a person, even in his relationship with his friend. But ultimately, what's more real? Is the reality of everyday life truly more authentic than the intense experiences of the mind? This is the central question that permeates the entire book. As if that weren't enough, beyond the planes of reality and fantasy, the present and the past also intersect, with the shared memories of the protagonist and his friend, transporting them back to their childhood spent in a small Tuscan town, where memories constantly resurface and are confronted. When considering the two protagonists, it's clear that this novel is primarily a love story, but the other story within it simultaneously adds elements of a detective novel, an action movie with drug-related plotlines, and a crime thriller. It's also a novel of memory, with the 'recherche', the nostalgia, of lost time, when you realize how much of it is slipping away. And it will never return. As death looms ever closer, this unspoken fear drives us to look back, to remember. The encounter with a child, Ishmael (the title's inspiration), will help the protagonist mature, eventually leading him to overcome this unspoken fear and find love.
