Ischemic heart disease (IHD) also known as coronary artery disease is a condition of the heart in which there is a reduction in the blood flow to the heart muscle. This occurs due to an accumulation of plaque in the arteries of the heart. Sustained obstruction of the blood flow to the heart results in ischemia and myocardial infarction. This leads to damage to the heart and eventual death, if not resolved. Ischemic heart disease can occur in individuals of any age group, but is more common in older adults.
