Is the U.S. Ready for a Minority President?

Overview

One wonders, why, given the long history and diversity of the United States, are American leaders not drawn from a wider pool? This anthology interrogates this question from countering perspectives. Why doesn't America have a woman president? What role does the media play in shaping our perceptions of leaders? How does the media exclude potential leaders by propagating stereotypes based race, gender, religion, and class? Readers will gain insight into the unseen barriers and prejudices that have restricted the leadership of the country to a select few.

Reviews

Review: Is the United States Ready for a Minority President? Given the Democratic Party's Presidential candidates this year, this collection could not get any more timely. Tackling such a difficult topic without slipping into preachiness or polemic is a bit tricky, but this collection largely succeeds. Its real strength lies in the frank assessments of the American character with regard to race. References to Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, Mitt Romney and others will heighten interest during this election year, but this volume will remain a useful resource for high school social studies students and teachers for much longer.--Doug's Student Reference Room, April 2008
