OverviewMaura G. Robinson was inspired to write this book after observing the behaviors of several police officers following the shootings of some community members around the country. She realized that part of their reaction was of shock, but she also realized that there was much more than that. She looked at the research and review of literature on law enforcement as a culture, and found key elements that helped her understand their reactions even more. This institution seems to share discriminatory behaviors against its own officers, affecting in particular women, LGBT and minorities. Maura believes that in order for law enforcement to deal with community race relations, they must first deal with its own internal culture of discrimination and racial practices against its own officers. There are also other factors within law enforcement affecting its culture/behavior such as the effects of PTSD, high suicide rates, domestic abuse and alcohol and drug use. She begs the question, Is Law Enforcement in Crisis? If so this institution may benefit from a systemic process of change as new paradigm shift. She also points out that law enforcement right now has been blame for the discrimination and exclusion practices affecting our communities, but the reality is this, but the time law enforcement enters the picture in a community in crisis, and a person from the culture of differences gets hurt badly or killed, all the other institutions within that community may be at fault, bear part of the blame, and are responsible for those behaviors.
