Overview

This book is a different attempt to help young adults - or any adult with a willingness to rethink their views - come to a better understanding of exactly what the Genesis creation story is saying and what it is not saying. The form is a series of questions that the reader is encouraged to consider carefully before reading the author's hints (which consist of useful details, suggested ideas, further questions to consider, or suggested answers). There is much more likelihood for learning in this form than in simply reading a book which presents an argument for a position, and thereby becomes an opportunity for the reader to argue back. The overall impact is to move the reader to understand that a proper reading of Genesis allows for, and even demands, acceptance of much of what science knows about creation. It also offers some surprising and creative thoughts about how Genesis aligns with science. As a mathematician at a national laboratory the author knew many world-class scientists, engineers and mathematicians. These highly educated individuals often viewed Christians as simple-minded because of their non-scientific beliefs, including a six day creation. On the other hand, as a leader in an evangelical church he knew many fine Christians who casually dismissed science's findings as conflicting with the Bible. This book is intended as a step toward bridging that gap of understanding.
