OverviewAshton is a broken down town, in Powder Valley somewhere in the Rocky Mountains and is trying to survive gentrification from its wealthier neighbor Cherry Ridge. It's nearly conceding its territory, but their teenage leaders, Irish, Jester, along with Quartermates Benny, Curly, Twitch and Mars stand in the way. Ashton High is the pride of the town and has a cruel but glory-filled history of being past champions of The Powder Match, against the Cherries. The Cherries, led by Sonny Gatson, live a life opposite to the kids of Ashton High and he will do anything to keep it that way. Rose, a mysterious new resident, arrives with a plan to carry the Ashes to prominence that involves an Olympic level snowboarder, Christmas Daye. Table of ContentsReviewsMixing the best parts of The Spectacular Now and The Hunger Games, Matt weaves a captivating tale of love, loss and teenage boy angst. Few books seem to be written for the normal, hormone-driven teenage boy, and Matt does a great job of channeling the thoughts of a young man coming into his own as he falls head over heels for a girl who he also must recruit for a dangerous mission that might almost certainly kill her. -Traci Jones, winner of the Coretta Scott King/Steptoe New Talent Award and author of Silhouetted by the Blue, Standing Against the Wind, and Finding My Place. ...powerfully reminiscent of Lord of the Flies and A Clockwork Orange. -Mario Acevedo, author of Felix Gomez vampire novels. Matt Meagher has written a ticking emotional time bomb, and you won't be able to put it down until it explodes. - David Hicks author of White Plains Equal parts A Clockwork Orange and Harry Potter, Irish Town is a gripping teenage coming-of- age story about students coming together, navigating the dystopian (and sometimes deadly) politics of their rival towns. - J.M., writer Irish Town is a story full of twists and turns. I found myself unable to put it down! - M.C. There are two distinct landscapes in Irish Town. The first is the external landscape that Matt creates, a dystopia that reflects real-world problems including climate change, substance abuse and issues of class. The second landscape is the internal one of his main character, a teenage boy named Jeremiah Connelly, nicknamed Jester, through whom the story is narrated. Jester is too clever for his own good, at times crass, cocky and incurably horny; but he's also fiercely loyal to his friends and maintains a sort of youthful innocence. In this way, Matt has created a character very likely to resonate with his readers.
