Following retirement he completed a PhD at University College Dublin, focusing on the treatment of educational disadvantage by successive Irish governments. In 2016, he published Irish Education, 1922-2007, Cherishing All the Children?. His current research interests lie in the development of the Irish education system in the early nineteenth century.
