Overview

Iranian cinema has existed for centuries, accompanying the history of cinema since its inception. The first film was shot in the country in 1900 and the first talking film dates back to 1930. Although some masterpieces were made in the period prior to the 1980s, it was from then on that cinema made in the country began to gain international recognition. From then on, filmmakers such as Ashgar Farahdi and Jafar Panahi emerged, but Abbas Kiarostami was the one who gained the most recognition in the West.
