OverviewDomestic violence is a serious issue in South Africa and is being recognized as a public health problem because it is associated with injuries and a wide range of mental and physical health problems. Until now no records of domestic violence were kept by police. This book is to report some major findings of a population based prevalence study. The objectives are to measure the prevalence of physical, sexual and financial abuse of women and to further find the profile of women who had experienced domestic violence in South Africa. For the purpose of this book, domestic violence refers to financial abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse of women by their male partners. The book uses secondary data namely the South African demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) 1998. Furthermore quantitative methods were used in this cross sectional study. The SADHS selected women aged between 15 and 49 years who where interviewed. Of the 11 735 respondents in the SADHS data, 4 948 where married or living with their partners. Literature indicate that women who are married or living with their partners are 'at risk' of domestic violence.
