He was admitted as a barrister in both England and New South Wales. He has taught and written extensively in the fields of Contracts and International Law. He was for twenty-five years the Editor of the Australian Yearbook of International Law. He has held visiting professorships at Nottingham, Bristol, King's College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science in the United Kingdom, and at the Osgoode Hall Law School in Canada, as well as being the Menzies Lecturer at the University of Virginia. He has written major articles for the Australian Yearbook of International Law, the British Yearbook of International Law and the Virginia Journal of International La, as well as books on Contract Law and International Law.
