Introduction to Thermal Analysis: Techniques and Applications

Overview

Thermal analysis is a well-established set of techniques for obtaining qualitative and quantitative information about the effects of various heat treatments on materials of all kinds, including new chemical compounds, plastics, ceramics, alloys, construction materials, minerals, foods and medicines. Heating is performed under strictly controlled conditions and can reveal changes in structure and other important properties of the material being studied. Such studies are of great practical importance in the use of materials. This second edition has been revised and rewritten to account for the changes that have occurred in the techniques and instrumentation of thermal analysis since the original edition in 1988. These changes include the introduction of new modulated temperature techniques and the exciting world of micro thermal analysis, based on novel adaptations of atomic force microscopy. These new techniques are integrated with the older standard techniques. The aim of this volume is to provide a brief, readable introduction to these versatile techniques from which it is possible to move on to specialist literature.

Reviews

About the first edition: ...readable basic textbook covering material rarely seen in general analytical text, at a level where the reader may gain an adequate overview of the information to be obtained from the various methods... This book is a valuable starting point for those wishing to explore the field.' Peter C. Uden, University of Massachusetts in Journal of the American Chemical Society (1990) Brown's work is a convenient and easy-to-read first book for those intending to use thermal analysis methods; it is a practical help in getting started.' Gyorgy Pokol in Journal of Thermal Analysis (1990) it is a valuable book and should be in the hand of everyone who needs a quick, first overview of the field.' Bernhard Wunderlich, University of Tennessee in Journal of Thermal Analysis (1989) ...I have found the book suitable for adoption for the course that U teach to undergraduates. I have recommended the book for adoption as a prescribed textbook for the course...' S.D. Sithole, Senior Lecturer, Chemistry Dept., University of Zimbabwe
