Overview

Over 1000 people have attended the three-day course on which this book is based since it was instituted in 1981 by JAPEC (Joint Association for Petroleum Exploration Courses). Key topics covered in this book are: the underlaying rationale for exploration; essential basic geological and geophysical exploration techniques; drilling and logging wells; an outline of reservoir geology and what constitutes reserves; and all of these topics are brought together in a case-history overview of exploration in the North Sea. The book is fully self-explanatory, needs no prior knowledge of geology or of exploration techniques, and as much as possible avoids the use of technical jargon. There is, however, a lengthy glossary of technical terms that can be used as a reference. The appeal of the book extends far beyond the audience originally envisaged for the JAPEC course. Anyone interested in finding out what petroleum exploration is all about will enjoy this volume.

`It is not easy to write a book on a highly technical subject that can readily be understood by the average layperson ... I think Bob Stoneley has achieved about the right balance ... I found the book of interest ... it is always good to get a new slant on exploration through someone else's eyes. I found the book easy to read ... I would ... recommend the book not only to non-geologists, but also to the undergraduate who wishes to become a professional geologist - it gives an easy bentree to the subject.' Journal of Petroleum Geology `I would recommend the book not only to non-geologists but also to the undergraduate who wishes to become a professional geologist - it gives an easy entree to the subject.' First Break, August 1995 I enjoyed this book. I was hooked from page one.... fascinating and eminently readable book... absolutely fulfils its objective of bringing the JAPEC course to a wider audience. The quality of the illustrations and photographs used, though all in black and white, is excellent, and I was impressed that in the majority of instances a full explanation was given with each illustration so that I didn't have to break my reading of the text or hunt through several passages in order to identify the context. I commend the book highly, not only to anyone in the field or to those associated with the industry, but to everyone who wants to understand the world about them just that little bit more.' Geoscientist The information is presented clearly and concisely, with the helpful use of diagrams and illustrations, and should be of interest to those seeking an accessible introduction to this technical field. The Journal of Energy Literature

I was hooked from page one. ... At the end of the book you will feel that you have been on the course and that all you now need is the T-shirt! I commend the book highly, not only to anyone in the field or to those associated with the industry, but to everyone who wants to understand the world about them just that little bit more. -- Geoscientist A short, easy-to-read book that explains how petroleum occurs and how geologists explore for it. . . .A good overview of petroleum exploration and, I might add, a good reference. --Geomedia
