Overview
This training resource and accompanying reader has been developed for a range of care and support staff who work with adults with intellectual disabilities and provides a full day's training. It aims to provide learners with an understanding of the mental health needs of this population and to promote mental health and well-being. The materials will also be of value to clinicians and support professionals relatively new to either mental health or intellectual disability, as well as students undertaking relevant courses. Through video clips and exercises, the materials give voice to the experiences and insights of people with intellectual disabilities who experience mental health issues. The resource includes slides and other online resources, guided self-learning and a separate Pavilion reader 'An Introduction to Supporting the Mental Health of People with Intellectual Disabilities'. Author Information
Ruwani Ampegama qualified as a learning disability nurse in 1993 and joined the Estia Centre in May 2017 as the senior training officer. Karina Marshall-Tate is a Consultant Nurse in learning disability and specialises in the mental health needs of people with a learning disability. She has led and managed national specialist inpatient and community services and more recently has been involved in developing education and training for health and social care staff who do not work in the field. Dr Eddie Chaplin is Professor of Mental Health in Neurodevelopmental Disorders at London South Bank University. He has extensive clinical experience managing and working in a range of local and national mental health services for people with learning disabilities and autism. Eddie is Editor for the Advances in Autism and Secretary of the European Association of Mental Health in Intellectual Disability. Steve Hardy held a training post at the Estia Centre for many years and is now Practice Development Nurse for the Adult Learning Disability Service at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.
