S.K. SOM, Ph.D., is Professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and currently the Dean of Academic Affairs (undergraduate studies). He has a teaching and research experience of more than thirty years. His field of expertise is thermal science and engineering and, in particular, the droplet and spray combustion. Apart from guiding 14 doctoral students and publishing more than 60 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals, he has served as principal investigator and chief consultant in several industrial projects with different government and private organizations like AR&DB, ISRO, Tata Steel, NML, etc. He has co-authored a textbook Introduction to Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machines published by McGraw-Hill Education. He has also contributed to distant learning education programme at the institute level as well the national level through video-based and web-based courses on Fluid Mechanics, Fluid Machines and Thermodynamics. He is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and also of National Academy of Sciences, India.
