OverviewTo many people, simply leaving the comforting security of dry land an d stepping onto a boat can be a terrifying ordeal. And to deliberately journey 10-20 miles offshore into hostile, powerful waters before diving down into those waters seeking untouched, virgin shipwrecks - often in the pitch blackness of deep water - seems incomprehensible. For Rod MacDonald, however it has been an all-consuming passion since he first started diving in 1982. Into the Abyss charts the dramatic highs and lows of MacDonald's diving career; one that has been packed full of incident, drama and excitement and has taken him to all of the great shipwreck sites of the world. From the sunken Japanese Fleet at the bottom of Truk Lagoon and Palau in the Pacific to diving into the third largest whirlpool in the world - The Corryvwrecken Whirlpool off the west coast of Scotland - MacDonald's work has taken him on a spell-binding journey beneath the seas, one that is now remarkably chronicled in this enthralling collection of diving experiences. Along the way, the excitement, the successes and the near tragic failures are reflected upon, and MacDonald urges readers to overcome some of Man's deepest f Full Product DetailsAuthor: Rod MacdonaldPublisher: Transworld Publishers Ltd Imprint: Mainstream Publishing Dimensions: Width: 16.20cm , Height: 2.50cm , Length: 24.10cm Weight: 0.568kg ISBN: 9781840187182ISBN 10: 1840187182 Pages: 240 Publication Date: 20 November 2003 Audience: General/trade , General Format: Hardback Publisher's Status: Out of Print Availability: Out of stock Table of ContentsReviewsThis is one for the enthusiast. The author is well known in the diving world, in part through earlier books, and is knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic. The book, which demonstrates all these qualities, aims to offer a close second to the experience of actually donning breathing equipment and disappearing beneath the waves. For the most part it describes diving with a purpose, primarily the investigation of wrecks, from that of HMS Hampshire (on which Lord Kitchener perished) off Scotland to ships of the Japanese fleet in the South Pacific. The ups and downs (sic) of various dives make fascinating reading, and the wonder of the undersea world is well evoked. So too are the dangers, including the Corryvreckan whirlpool in west Scotland where a test with a dummy body showed that it was sucked rapidly 200 metres to the sea bed. The eight pages of colour illustrations add to the feeling of being there. It is a book to prompt a new passion or feed an existing one.
