OverviewWhat is Liberty? And, why is it so important in Interstellar Law? Liberty can be defined in many different ways. As discussed in Chapter 2, 19th century French philosopher Benjamin Constant[1], for example, in his work Political Writings realised that there was a Liberty of the Ancients (focussing on communal liberties) and a Liberty of the Moderns (focussing on individual liberties). For our purposes of Interstellar Law, let us consider that in a space colony, we would need both communal as well as individual liberties. This is Mr. Risman's 23rd law text. Mr. Risman is an Honours LL.B. graduate from the University of London, and obtained his LL.M from the same institution. Mr. Risman is a member of the Society of Legal Scholars of the United Kingdom and Ireland. He has advised the UK Supreme Court, and has spoken at Legal Conferences in the UK and abroad.
