Author Information

A native of the Netherlands with a doctorate in physics from the Technical University of Delft, Jacob W.M. Baars has spent his professional life in the area of Radio Astronomy. In particular he has been closely involved with the conception and realisation of several radio telescope projects, which were realised by international collaborations. After three years (1963-66) at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, USA, he joined the Netherlands Foundation for Radio Astronomy and functioned as assistant project manager and observatory head of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. In 1975 he moved to the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR) in Bonn, Germany to lead the Millimeter Radio Telescope Project in Southern Spain, which is part of the French-German-Spanish observatory IRAM. He also managed the MPIfR/ Steward Observatory (Tucson, Arizona) collaborative Submillimeter Telescope Project in Arizona. On leave from the MPIfR, he participated in the planning and design phase of the Large Millimeter Telescope in Mexico and the global collaboration for the Atacama Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
