French is the Inamori Professor of ethics, director of the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence, and a tenured member of the Philosophy Department at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to starting at Case Western, she taught for eleven years at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She has B.A. in philosophy, classical studies, and history, and a Ph.D. in philosophy. Her main area of research is military ethics, and she is widely published in this field. Michael Scharf is the John Deaver Drinko-Baker & Hostetler Professor of Law and the associate dean for global legal studies, with supervisory responsibility over the international law centers, institutes, and programs at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He serves as president of the International Criminal Law Network and managing director of the Public International Law and Policy Group, a Nobel Peace Prize-nominated nongovernmental organization.
