Internal Coaching: The Inside Story

Overview

Internal Coaching: The Inside Story provides a window into the world of internal coaching: the challenges and rewards for the coaches themselves and the ways in which organisations can ensure that they can get best value for money from their investment in them. Internal coaching is booming yet there has been surprisingly little written about the unique nature of the internal coaching role. Drawing on the stories of hundreds of internal coaches, coach sponsors, lead coaches, supervisors of internal coaches and coach trainers, this book gives internal coaches a voice. Building on the success of the first edition, this brand-new edition offers an accessibly written mine of information for practitioners and academic researchers alike, incorporating many real-life examples of different practice, provided by internal coaches themselves, plus references to over 180 sources of relevant research. Whether you’re an experienced coach, a leader building a coaching culture within your organisation, or someone just beginning to explore this fascinating field, this book is here to support and inspire you.

Reviews

‘Internal Coaching is a key component for any organisation serious about creating a coaching culture. In this fully updated second edition, the authors share insights from research and practice, to set a new standard for those involved with internal coach communities. Well written, informative and an essential addition to your bookshelf.’ Professor Jonathan Passmore, Henley Business School and Senior Vice President, EZRA Coaching, LHH ‘This indispensable guide delves into the intricacies, challenges, and rewards of internal coaching. It is a true practitioner's handbook, offering invaluable insights, experiences and practical how-to guides. Use this book to plan your approach, engage with stakeholders, develop and sustain your internal coaches for organisational impact. If you are contemplating internal coaching within your organisation, this book is an absolute necessity.’ Judith Barton, Founder and Director of Coaching and Mentoring, British School of Coaching ‘This 2nd Edition is an invaluable guide for all internal coaches and sponsors of internal coaching services. It brings to life what it is like to be an internal coach with all its rewards, pitfalls and ethical dilemmas. The authors provide an extended range of useful examples and templates, brought up to date for 2025, on how organisations are now approaching the challenge of setting up, supporting and harnessing the power of internal coaching. Essential reading.’ John Leary-Joyce, CEO, Academy of Executive Coaching ‘Being an Internal Coach can sometimes feel like a lonely place. This book allows you to feel as though you are part of something big; a movement that is having an enormous impact. Looking for multiple perspectives, it is a fantastic guide to all aspects of internal coaching. A must read for a community that is changing the face of coaching from within the commercial world.’ Clare Walker, Coaching and Mentoring Lead, Vodafone ‘This fabulous book is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in internal coaching. It offers comprehensive insights into the evolving landscape of internal coaching, addressing both the challenges and opportunities faced by coaches and organisations alike. The practical examples, case studies, and evidence-based approaches make it a must-read for experienced coaches, leaders and those new to the field. Don’t run an internal network without it!’ Mike Taylor, Talent Development, Co-op Group ‘This book is a gift to anyone involved in the complicated and rewarding world of internal coaching. It offers practical, relevant and researched solutions throughout to overcome some of the murkier areas of challenge for internal coaches with updated case studies to unpack the changing landscape of coaching as a practice. It zooms directly into the inner world of the internal coach - how we coach, who we coach and explores and unpicks the foundations of what organisations, teams, coaches, clients and stakeholders all gain from coaching. I love the new additions that highlight the challenges we face to become wiser, more diverse, more ethical, more mindful, more conscious and aware on the path to better serve our clients. I cannot recommend this text highly enough to celebrate and shine light onto the value and contribution that internal coaches make to their organisations and systems. It is also unafraid to illuminate the darkness, shadows and dilemmas faced by them in doing so. Every page you turn has a new, relevant and well considered offering.’ Cath Brown, Director of Cath Brown Consultancy Ltd ‘This book is packed full of all things an internal coach needs to know and do to perform at their best and I am delighted to endorse it as an all-encompassing resource. I will be recommending it to all our coaches at the University of Liverpool and members of the EMCC’s Internal Coaching Special Interest Group.’ Tracy Ellis, Lead Coach, University of Liverpool and Lead, Internal Coaching SIG, EMCC ‘Internal coaching is one of the most helpful development opportunities that organisations offer. All it touches will reap huge benefits but to make this happen, and do it successfully, is not without its challenges. This book provides a wonderful synthesis of learning from many organisations – there is no need to start from scratch if you are looking to embed coaching in your organisation.’ Amisha Wilde, Head of Coaching, Network Rail ‘If you’re a leader who is passionate about building a coaching culture or you’re an internal coach who wants a guide for their work - this book is a must for you. It guides you through building a coaching culture that fits your organisation. It cleverly leads you through the trickier scenarios and ethical considerations that go right to the heart of the work of an internal coach. Brilliant insights that I wish someone had shared with me years ago!’ Catherine Boddington, Founder, Internal Coach Network ‘The term ‘inside story’ is an extremely apt way of describing what this book can offer the reader. It normalises the complexities and real challenges associated with internal coaching, whether related to power, diversity, ethics or collaboration. An excellent array of case studies offers the reader permission to find their own individual approach to internal coaching. I have no doubt that the sharing of this book within any organisation can promote meaningful reflection and purposeful conversations, all in service of people coming together to design, offer and celebrate internal coaching.’ Steven Johnstone, Director of Learning Solutions, BPP ‘Reading this book is like having a friend who completely understands the challenges we face and offers really insightful ideas. Whether you are building a coaching culture, or you are an internal coach, it’s an essential read for the Internal Coaching world, that offers guidance and expands thinking.’ Beth Krucien, Organisational Development Manager, Veolia Praise from the First Edition: 'Finally, a book dedicated to the internal coach. Finally, a handbook for coaches that puts ethics before everything else. It gives me great pleasure to recommend this accessible and inspirational book for everyone engaged in helping conversations inside organisations.' Erik de Haan, Director of Centre for Coaching, Ashridge, and Professor of Organisation Development and Coaching, VU University, Amsterdam 'Highly practical, engaging, and long overdue. This book is an important contribution to a growing area of coaching. The combination of experience, research, practice and theory present in this book make it a must for organisations and practitioners thinking about, or currently running, internal coaching programmes. While targeted towards internal coaching, the wide variety of case examples, insightful commentary, and a willingness to approach difficult issues make this book an important resource for all coaches.'
