He has played multiple roles across teaching, research, and administration, as a professor, Head of the Department and the Officiating Director (IITD). Prof. Thyagarajan has germinated novel ideas and demonstrated high impact scientific results in the fields of fiber optics, optical telecommunication, quantum optics and integrated optoelectronics, in projects funded both by federal (Asia, Europe, USA) and commercial sources. During his career, he has held numerous prestigious visiting scientist positions across the globe including in USA, France, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Poland, and has been decorated by multiple governments (India, France, USA) and industrial organizations for his outstanding contributions to science and education. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is also a recipient of the Officier dans L’ordre des Palmes académiques from the French Government. He has held key positions in national and international federal committees overseeing funding allocations and scientific work in the areas of quantum optics, optical telecommunication, and integrated photonics.
