INTACH's Directory for Traditional Building Crafts is India's first-ever initiative for preserving and promoting the building crafts across the country, that are on the verge of going into oblivion due to lack of patronage. Saurashtra is a unique example of the diversity of crafts and cultures and is home to several extraordinary architectural masterpieces. Heritage Craft and Community Division realizes the real need for orienting young artisans, architects, designers, and builders to utilize and disseminate the existing knowledge of building crafts; revive and rejuvenate the skills and energies of the artisans, by providing appropriate opportunities and channels, such as workshops, exposure visits, cross-cultural learning exercises, and creation of a network of like-minded organizations.This book presents a study of the building crafts and craftspersons of Saurashtra, with the intention to initiate a renewed interest among local residents, scholars, conservation architects and policymakers.
