Overview

This work is a practical guide to the principles of process measurement and control aimed at those contemplating, or entering a career in the area. It aims to give insight to the ""real"" world of work and the expectations of the employer. When employed in industry, but not in it's research and development departments, we do not get the opportunity every day to use all that we have learned at college or university; a view shared by many engineering professionals. Engineers working in this field are expected to have the ability to recognize problems concealed in masses of data, but with the ""tools"" of experience and understanding of the principles involved, provide minimal cost solutions using available technology. This work seeks not only to provide those tools but also act as a refresher for those already in the industry or as an introduction to newcomers especially readers who are studying the course in another discipline. Key features include: the use of a theoretical background to reinforce the validity of use; the use of advanced control systems currently in use to demonstrate how process control is achieved; and the minimimum use of heavy maths, which many find a turn-off to set out the practical ideas involved.
