In Nancy Dunham's poetry, there is a sense of awe and an understanding of both the immediacy, distance, and power of nature. The poet herself is an outgrowth of that feeling. Every line sings with a heartbeat rhythm that is uniquely her. Nancy's world is full of music, mystery, and surprise. Oftentimes the mystery is couched in common things-a tree, a river, a letter, a door, the moon in the sky. We read these images in her poems, and suddenly we become aware that these are our thoughts, too. We just didn't have the words. Dunham's poem There Are No Walls to My Imagination says it all. Dunham's poetry opens us up to ourselves.
