OverviewA fledgling columnist in a brand new job discovers that she has breast cancer after a routine mammogram. She decides to share the experiences with the readers of her hometown newspaper, describing with surprise and wit the intimate details of her mammogram and biopsy and the treatment that followed over the next nine months. Kubek tells readers about the little surprises she encounters; wonders why no one described the biopsy table to her in advance, or informed her of the details of pre-surgery preparation before the lumpectomy. The reader learns what happens with chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In turn, Kubek learns at a high school class reunion that there were far more readers of her column than she ever imagined. Overwhelmed by her classmates' positive feedback and well-wishes, she decided that taking the job at the newspaper wasn't such a bad idea after all.
