Overview

Der wohl kurioseste Bau im Wörlitzer Park ist die Insel Stein mit einer kleinen Nachbildung des Vesuv, einem Amphitheater und der Villa Hamilton, die den Landsitz Sir Hamiltons an der Küste des Posillipo kopiert. Von den Eindrücken einer Italienreise geprägt, setzte der Fürst Franz von Anhalt-Dessau so seinen Wunsch um, einige Beobachtungen der Reise auch seinem Volk zugänglich zu machen. Zu besonderen Anlässen konnte sogar das gewaltige Schauspiel eines Vulkanausbruchs inszeniert werden, das heute nach jahrelanger Instandsetzung wieder durchführbar ist.
