Allen, a former curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is now the Charles Edwin Wilbour Professor of Egyptology at Brown University. His research interests include ancient Egyptian language and literature (both secular and funerary), ancient Egyptian thought (more commonly called ""religion""), and history. He is the author of twenty books and numerous articles on these subjects, including The Art of Medicine in Ancient Egypt, the catalogue of his exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum in 2005.
