He is also the first President of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) from April 2001 till June 2009 and Professor Emeritus, The University of Tokyo. He received the degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1969. His expertise is materials science, especially fracture mechanics and non-destructive testing of metal, ceramics, and composite materials.
