Table of ContentsReviewsFor anyone who enjoys history, especially the history of medicine and more specifi cally that of diabetes, Innovations in Diabetes by Dr. MengHee Tan is a must for one's home library. Th e book writt en for patients in dialogue form, where patients, oft en at a reception or having coff ee, ask practical questions about diabetes to a diabetes expert. Interestingly, having heard Dr. Tan speak, I could hear Dr. Tan speaking to me as I read the words of the expert. Th e discussion is succinct, easy to comprehend, and authoritative. Topics covered include everything from diagnostic classifi cation, epidemiology, lifestyle recommendations, medications (especially insulin), and complications. It is a book where one doesn't need to read continuously, but one can search an answer by simply going to the relevant chapter. As opposed to Google, one feels as if the expert physician is talking to the reader, a person with diabetes. Th e reason for this is, in the book a person with diabetes is asking the questions. While the history of each topic is covered in detail, the reality is the science of diabetes is changing rapidly. Th e discussion is as up to date as possible, including new information reported this year. Still, while many medical books lose their relevance due to new research leading to new treatments, Innovations in Diabetes is not in that category due to the historical aspects of the disease and its treatments most students of diabetes (of all ages) will fi nd fascinating. One reason for this is the there is no other source that contains the historical aspects of all aspects of diabetes, not just insulin, non-insulin medications, the understanding of complications, etc. PRAISE V Both past and current controversies are addressed in a non-biased way, and everything is supported by evidence. Although this is not necessarily a book for physicians, clinical and research fellows in endocrinology fi nishing their training in diabetes will all want to own this book. Irl B.
