Justice Gopal Sri Ram was born in Kuala Lumpur and had his early education in Malaysia. After teaching English and Mathematics for a short while, he proceeded to England where he was called to the Bar in July 1969. On his return to Kuala Lumpur he commenced practice. He had a varied and distinguished practice at the Bar. He argued landmark criminal, civil and constitutional cases which changed the face of Malaysian law. He appeared as a senior advocate in cases in West Malaysia and Singapore. He has also appeared and argued cases before the Privy Council. In September 1994, he went into the Court of Appeal, becoming the first judge in the history of Malaysia to go directly from the Bar to an appellate court.
